Side one track one (with apologies to Nick Hornby et al.).
Here’s a list of my top five Side One Track One (ones?). I’ve listed them in descending order from 5 to 1. Please excuse my attempt at trying to explain why I picked these songs, why not see for yourself by downloading it HERE.
5. “Sunday Morning” by The Velvet Undergournd; The Velvet Underground and Nico
A nod to the inspiration of this post. It’s a deadly track, and it invites you to devour the rest of the record.
4. “Block of Ice” by The Oh Sees; The Masters Bedroom is worth spending a night in
Throws down the gauntlet right out of the gate, featuring giant hooks and everything they’ve got. This isn’t as warm of a welcome as Sunday Morning, but rather the lead off track is slapping you on the back, grabbing you a beer, and all of the while giving you a come hither look.
3. “Bitch’n” by The Donnna; Bitch’n
I probably should have switched this up with number 4, but I think it has earned its place, albeit just barely. Nothing too ground breaking in this track, (especially for a T1 S1), but it does incorporate elements that are great to start an album with: sirens, an epic build, sing-a-long etc. It’s a strong song and makes for a good example.
2. “Sex Beat” by The Gun Club; Fire of Love
This song is way too much and would’ve been number one if it wasn’t for……
1. “Angel of Death” by Slayer; Reign in Blood
How can you beat a lead off track like this? A stellar album all of the way through, but nothing was as fast or insane as this cut. How could you not start an album like this? Hell, how can you not start your day with this?
What say all of you?
